Building a Custom Reloading Bench for Your Gun Room

How to Use CradleGrid For Your Gun Room Workbench

This week at SecureIt, Ryan and Tom highlight the workbench inside of the SecureIt gun room. You’ll hear about the benefits of adding CradleGrid to your reloading bench and work area, how easy it is to install and how you can efficiently organize your storage and tools.

Have an Idea for a Weekly Topic?

We have a lot planned for our YouTube series as we head into the fall, but we still hear your ideas! If you have a topic you’d like to see us cover in our bi-weekly updates, be sure to contact us.

Product Feature of the Week: CradleGrid Accessories

Steel Panels:

The first thing you’ll need to do is measure the area you plan to use for your work area. When preparing for steel gun wall panels to behind your workbench, you should consider if you want the panels to align with the top of your bench or rest slightly above it. We recommend using panels that will go below the top of your bench so that you can utilize CradleGrid within all of the available space.

Gun Wall Panel - Small

We offer two types of heavy-duty steel panels for your gun room’s work area. The small panels are 17.25″w x 16″ h, and the large panels are 17.25″w x 36″h. So, when measuring out your workbench area or reloading station, be sure to consider those dimensions as well. You can also contact our armory and gun room build team via [email protected] if you need assistance.

Storage Bins:

When it comes to efficiency in a gun room or any firearm storage system, a key element is the method of organization! While that seems like it would be obvious, there aren’t a whole lot of storage options that provide efficient storage. SecureIt’s modular storage bins one of our most simple yet effective storage solutions that provide superior organization. Storing any gun oils, cleaning products or liquids in a small bin is a great way to prevent accidental spills from making a large mess. The mess is contained, and the bin can be easily cleaned.

Small Gun Storage Bin w/ Cleaner

For gun assembly and maintenance, a medium or large bin allows you to keep track of individual parts and the disassembled gun can be conveniently stored with all associated parts and tools inside of a safe or cabinet. When you’re ready to continue working, the bin can simply be attached to the wall above your gun room’s workbench, so it is out of the way yet easy to reach.

Gun Wall Mounts:

A fundamental component to any gun wall build is the gun wall mount system. SecureIt gun wall mounts can be purchased as a single set or a Trio Rifle Mount Kit that includes a tiered system. If you are working on a rifle or swapping out the lower receivers, having a gun wall mount set up above your workbench is a handy solution for gun part storage.

Metal Storage Trays and Shelves:

Metal Storage Trays are a flexible storage accessory that can maximize gun wall space. While sitting above your reloading station area, the ability to store and organize gun parts, tools, and reloading equipment creates an efficient workflow. Everything you need is within reach and organize to meet your workspace needs.

Re-Think Handgun Storage

Finding the Best in Handgun Storage

This Week at SecureIt: Ryan and Tom dive into the topic of handgun storage and handgun storage related accessories. They’ll go over all the storage products for pistols and revolvers offered by SecureIt and why a Fast Box could be the efficient storage system you need. Be sure to check out the video below to see the products in action!

Product Showcase of the Week: Handgun Storage Options

Pistol Pegs

Adding a Single Pistol Peg to your gun safe or gun wall is a convenient way to incorporate handguns into your rifle storage or create your own decked out handgun storage system. They hang from a single louver and can adjust on the fly. Each peg also comes with a rubber protective coating to protect the barrel of your revolver or pistol. Each pistol peg will store a handgun with a caliber of 9mm or larger and they come in three orientations:

Looking for something that holds a larger capacity? Our Eleven-Peg Rack holds a higher density of handguns and is a great fit for any retrofitted gun safe, Agile series cabinet, Model 84, or custom gun wall.

Gun Wall - High Density Handgun Storage

Storage Bins for Handguns

Our Medium Storage Bins allow gun owners to store smaller caliber handguns along with magazines, ammunition and associated gear. The Medium Bins have a storage capacity of 15lbs and come with a polymer divider. Dividers allow you to store multiple pistols in one bin while not having to worry about your guns becoming damaged from bumping into one another. These bins work great if you are storing pistols or revolvers in a Fast Box.

Gun Wall - Handgun Bin Storage

For larger handguns and additional support, the Large Storage Bins will provide storage for any size handgun, ammunition, and gear. With a storage capacity of 30lbs, it will be difficult to overload these bins. They also work great when disassembling your handguns and keeping all the associated parts organized in one safe place. The Large Bins are a great fit for any Agile series cabinets, Model 84, or custom gun wall.

The Fast Box Hidden Storage System

With a Fast Box hidden gun safe, handgun owners can store a number of pistols or revolvers along with associated ammunition and gear. The neoprene pad (standard with all Fast Boxes) adds a level of protection to the firearms and valuables you choose to store. When storing a Fast Box in a horizontal application, gun owners can store multiple handguns with an assortment of gear.

The Story Behind CradleGrid

Why did we develop CradleGrid?

All great solutions come from challenging problems. CradleGrid is no different. Nearly 20 years ago, US special forces needed a weapon storage system that provided visual inventorying, was quick access in emergencies, and could store weapons with modifications in a high-density orientation. Basically, they needed a storage system that could store anything, be accessed quickly, and be accounted for at a glance. The outdated legacy systems they used were designed for older-style weapons and were not meant for rapid deployment. Their storage was outdated, breaking, and expensive to maintain and replace. Enter SecureIt. We found a broken system and started right away researching the issues facing the military so we could develop the best solution.

After a couple of years, numerous armory visits, and hundreds of conversations with armorers, CradleGrid was developed. The basic idea behind the design is flexibility. The Upper Cradle is designed to hold a barrel, magwell, or rail of an AR platform, and at the same time store something as small as an MP5 or as large as an M2. Since these firearms vary in total length, the Upper Cradle was designed to adjust vertically on the back panel grid. Using one Cradle to store many different weapons was crucial for the military; it meant that one inexpensive piece could be used over and over again — and saved the military time and money.

Rifle support storage

SecureIt Stock Bases can store up to two rifles or shotguns at a time.

Much like the Upper Cradle, the Stock Base was designed with the same intention of having one unit able to store hundreds of weapon platforms. It is tiered and angled so that you can adjust the lean angle of a firearm or mortar tube, and store a fully modded M4 next to anything else. The Stock Bases rest on the bottom of the system, allowing even more flexibility for the armorer, and they lock into each other to prevent moving or shifting.

Grid panels allow gun owners to adjust their storage systems as they see fit, not as the storage system dictates

The last piece, the Grid Wall, is the backbone of the system. The design provides both strength and versatility. Grid panels are heavy 14GA steel or injection-molded composite and can hold hundreds of pounds of gear.

Weapons storage has not fundamentally changed in decades. It is static and certainly has not kept up with the sweeping changes in the size and shape of modern firearms

Until now!

Gun room with reloading bench

Designed to accommodate weapons with optics

SecureIt AR Rifle With Scope Showing Offset From Wall

The CradleGrid system was also designed to accommodate weapons with optics attached, so you’ll never need to re-zero because of an inadequate storage system.

Straight-line access and organizational awareness

With SecureIt’s CradleGrid system, you get straight-line access to each and every weapon. There is never a need to move other weapons out of the way. You also get a comprehensive view of your entire weapons line-up for maximum efficiency. Organize your armory as you see fit, not as your storage system dictates.

The end result is an efficient system that can store any firearm, provide you with quick defensive or offensive capability, and is built for life. Whether you’re an armorer, a gun enthusiast, or a sport shooter — CradleGrid is the best solution to protect your valuable firearms.

Ammo and Gear Storage Solution – Metal Trays

Storing gear and ammo with your guns can be a challenge.

The gun storage industry has never addressed gear, ammo, tools and gun parts storage, however, SecureIt CradleGrid accessories are the answer. Let’s look at the storage tray — a versatile and robust storage solution.

The metal storage tray spans 6 louvers & holds a variety of accessories.

The Metal Storage Tray is a flexible storage accessory that allows you to maximize your gun safe or gun cabinet space. The storage trays are 4″ deep, so you can fit them between your rifles and the back panel. The ability to store and organize gear behind your rifles is unique to our CradleGrid system and allows you to maximize your storage space.

Storage Tray

Storage tray in a Model 84 holding a number of magazines, ammo, accessories & cleaning equipment.

If you want easy access, put it above the row of rifles in your safe or cabinet.

I have two Metal Storage Trays in my Model 52. One is behind all of my rifles, and I have a box of ammo for each rifle that I put in the tray. The second one is above my rifles and it holds my extra magazines and a speed loader for a revolver.

The Metal Storage Tray spans 6 louvers wide, so it will fit in the Agile line or any larger cabinet. This width is perfect for ammo storage, optics, spare parts, or any other extra gear item that you’re not sure where to put. Don’t worry about weight, you will typically run out of space before you overload metal storage trays. I recommend storing no more than 20 lbs. on the tray.

For high-density ammo and gear storage order the Metal Storage Tray today!

Design and Build a Custom Gun Wall / Gun Room

Building a gun room and gun walls has become very popular in America. There are many reasons to consider a gun room.

  • If you have a large collection, safes and cabinets may not work well for you.
  • Security can be easier with a properly constructed gun room with a vault door.
  • Rifle displays look great in the ultimate man cave

The purpose of this article is to give you a solid understanding of the gun storage system and how to best optimize space in your room.

What You’ll need:

  • SecureIt CradleGrid panels
  • 2 x 4s
  • Plywood
  • Level
  • Measuring Tape
  • Drywall Screws
  • Screw gun

Time:

  • 1-2 Days
  • 2 people – for system layout and installation. Custom Woodwork or cabinets will add to the time.

Initial Planning

What is the purpose of the room or wall? There are unlimited possibilities with the CradleGrid system: High-density mass gun storage? Show and display? Storage and gun maintenance? Reloading? Most likely your project will be a combination of some or all of these.

You can custom design a gun wall or gun room to meet your exact needs. Also, consider SecureIt pre-configured gun wall kits. These are complete systems that are ready to install.

Gun Room / Gun Wall Considerations:

Space:

For estimating space requirements the general rule of thumb is 12 vertical rifles per row every 36″ of linear wall space. For horizontal displays, estimate 4 rifles for every square yard. When storing rifles vertically the length of the rifles will determine the vertical space required. We will go into more detail below.

gun wall panel diagram

Vertical storage – How to store the second row.

When storing rifles vertically, there are 2 ways to hold the second row: using our 6 rifle stock shelf or using individual rifle shelves.

Rifles on 6 capacity rifle shelves VS Rifles on single stock shelves

6 capacity rifle shelves fit anywhere on the system. The stock base supports sit on the shelf.

Single stock shelves

The single stock shelves work well when you have a wider variety of rifle lengths and you need maximum vertical efficiency.

Construction:

Are you using existing walls or are you building new? Existing walls – Normal walls (studs and drywall) should be covered with 1/2″ or 3/4″ plywood. If building a new you can substitute plywood for drywall. – depending on the wall layout and other items (doors, windows, electrical) it may be beneficial to build the wall with drywall then cover the area for the gun wall with plywood.

Construction Note

The louvered panels attach to the plywood via 1″ drywall screws. There are holes punched every 2″, normally you will use 6 screws for the 16″ panels and 8-10 for the 36″ panels. If there are shelves that are holding a lot of weight (for example: full ammo cases) you may want to add additional screws to support the load.

Planning and layout for a gun wall

How many panels will fit? To determine the maximum number of panels that will fit use the formula: wall length in inches divided by 17.25 (the width of one panel) Our room dimensions Above is a drawing of the room we will turn into an armory. The right side of the room is open. We will build a wall with a secure double door system. This is the room with the gun storage system, workbench, wall built and double doors drawn in .

Let’s look at each wall:

Here we have a small drawing with the walls labeled and the back wall “A”, this has grid panels and our workbench. To calculate to a number of panels: the wall is 9′ = 108″ each grid panel is 17.25″ wide so 108 divided by 17.25 = 6.26 we can fit 6 panels on the wall. these are centered and our workbench sits in front. Wall “B” we use the same process here: wall – 18′ 6″ = 222″ — 222 / 17.25 = 12.86 so we use 12 panels. Wall “C” On this wall we are using hardwood between the panels. This gives the system a softer and warmer look. We installed the plywood, then used 1×4 hardwood to create the framework, then the panels were attached in the center sections. Normally we would do all walls the same, however, we wanted to use this room as a showpiece for different styles and looks.

System Height

Determine what height is right for your wall. There are two lengths of panels, 16″ high and 36″. Two rows of the large panels fit most applications. This yields 6′ of vertical grid wall. In our room, we start the bottom panels 14″ off the floor. The bottom row of rifles sits on the Stock bases on the floor. 14: off puts to the top of the system at 86″ in a standard room with 8′ ceiling the results look good and work well. You can also start panels on the floor, use Two 36’s and one 16″ panel this will give you a total height of 88″. With this option, you will have the ability to use bins, shelves, and other accessories for the floor up. drawing In the image above we show a 72″ high system 14″ off the floor. There are 24 rifles stored vertical and 3 horizontal. The rifle barrels at the top can be taller than the system. Next, we show floor to ceiling using 3 panels.

Option:

use 2 x 12 lumber or build a wood base on the floor for stock bases. This gets the rifles off the floor. Painting the wood Black or an accent color will give you a nice finished look.

Plywood

Plywood is placed over the drywall and painted (we recommend dark grey or black) so you can attach the panels. We use 1″ drywall screws to secure the panels to the plywood. The screws will go through the plywood and into the drywall. If you want to option to remove or move the gun storage system with minimal impact on the wall. Install the plywood with furring strips to give you enough space for the screw. This is also the method for installing a gun storage system into brick or concrete walls. For brick or concrete walls use furring strips Block wall detail for gun room

Mounting the panels.

In a 2 panel high system, we start with the top panels. measure the height where you want the bottom. Snap a line where the bottom will be, make sure it is level. We normally will screw a temporary ledger board onto the plywood at the line so to support the panel during install. When installing screws into panels, make sure to center the screws in the holes. If a screw is off-center it can push the panel off the line as it is tightened. – quick fix: if a screw is off a bit, leave it loose until the other screws are seated then tighten this will keep the panels straight. We install screws every 3 -4 louvers and every 2-3 rows. adding a few screws to the panel joints will keep things straight and clean. When the panels are installed you can start adding components and firearms. There are unlimited options as far as how you store things! Simple & Amazing Storage Bins

Modular Gun Storage Bins

When it comes to efficiency in a modern armory or home gun storage system, organization is the key element! SecureIt® CradleGrid™ Technology modular storage bins provide simple and effective storage solutions that add a superior level of organization.

Bins, Gear, & Gun Storage

No mess storage for cleaning supplies or reloading equipment

Firearm cleaning supplies in storage bins

Cleaning materials should be stored in bins. Were your cleaner to leak in these bins, the mess would remain in the bin rather than spilling over firearms, equipment, or supplies beneath it.

Brushes and products for cleaning and maintaining odd, or large caliber firearms can be stored in a bin set in the grid next to, or behind, the gun. When you need to perform maintenance or clean your firearms, you can easily take the gun and the bin, loaded with all the supplies, tools, and materials specifically used for that firearm, over to your workbench bench. After the tasks at hand have been completed, return everything to the cabinet or gun safe.

Ammo Storage

Rifle Mags in Storage Bins

Specialized or precision ammunition can be stored with its associated firearm in the same manner. This will allow for efficient inventorying along with quick access.

Maximize space behind guns
